2020 Great White Bird Trail

Hazelhurst Gallery, Gymea

The Great White Bird Trail is a cycling and walking trail that stretches from Cronulla to Sydney CBD via Kurnell, the Botany Bay Trail, and Sydney Green Ring.

The trail honours the Gweagal, original custodians of Kurnell and Sutherland; Thomas Holt, the energetic pastoralist who gave Sutherland its name; and Michael Kitching, a British born Australian sculptor with ties to Kurnell, Sydney Airport and Sydney Town Hall.

The bicycle tour will occur over two days. Day one will go from Kurnell, site of first contact, to the site of Sutherland House, and conclude at Kogarah Rail Station. The second day will begin at Kogarah and proceed to Sydney International Airport Terminal at Mascot, the Warren at South Marrickville and then to Sydney Town Hall.

The events of the First Contact, Holt and Kitching's legacies will provoke discussion on colonialism, displacement, resilience and survival.
